How We Plan to Collect Classic Plus Census Data
"Our goal is to collect useful, accurate population data while remaining strictly within the rules, APIs, and policies established by Blizzard."
s World of Warcraft Classic Plus approaches, the Camelot Chronicle is actively preparing two flexible, robust approaches for collecting and preserving player population census data. Exactly how this operates will depend on how Blizzard releases Classic Plus, what information is exposed through the game's addon APIs, what census functionality remains available, and what Blizzard's Terms of Service and addon policies permit.
Our goal is to build a transparent, long-term historical record of active population demographics across all realms without relying on single static estimates or unverified claims.
Approach 1: Primary In-Game Census Addon
Our primary approach will be an in-game addon that gathers publicly accessible character details directly through Blizzard’s supported lua APIs, utilizing standard /who-style query mechanisms if available in Classic Plus.
Planned Data Observations:
Phase 1 (Internal Collector Fleet): Initially, our team will operate dedicated collector accounts logged into realms to run periodic census scans automatically.
Phase 2 (Community Collector Network): To overcome individual collector limits, we plan to release the addon publicly so players across all realms can voluntarily contribute census observations, drastically increasing sample frequency and breadth.
Dataset Outputs & Analytics Powered:
- Active Realm Population Estimates
- Horde vs. Alliance Faction Ratios
- Class & Race Distribution Trends
- Level Progression & Server Curves
- Historical Launch-Day & Patch Analytics
- Population Trends over Days & Months
Approach 2: Client-Side External Collector
Our secondary evaluation considers a standalone desktop client operating alongside the game client. This could potentially offer capabilities outside traditional addon sandbox limits.
Strict Compliance & Policy Guarantee:
We will never employ client-side memory inspection, packet sniffing, or unpermitted client modifications. Any external collector will be built strictly within what Blizzard explicitly permits and carefully vetted against Blizzard’s Terms of Service and Addon Developer Guidelines.
Why We Are Planning for Both Approaches
Because World of Warcraft Classic Plus is in active development, there are key technical variables that remain unconfirmed until official launch:
- •Game API scope & query throttle limits
- •Availability of standard /who search hooks
- •Addon sandboxing and frequency restrictions
- •Potential official Blizzard Web/REST APIs
By architecting our data ingestion pipeline to handle multiple input channels, we ensure the Camelot Chronicle census engine remains resilient and adaptable regardless of launch specifications.
Our Primary Goal
"Build a transparent, long-term historical record of Classic Plus population data from launch day onward."
We preserve underlying observation logs so players, guild officers, and realm communities can accurately track how populations evolve over days, weeks, months, and years.
